Product Description

"The history of Scharffenberger Cellars begins in 1981 in the heart of California's Anderson Valley. Situated only miles from the coastal influences of the Pacific Ocean, Scharffenberger Cellars also enjoys the deep soils and sunshine within the protected valley. Originally founded by John Scharffenberger, the company has undergone many transitions, including a name change when it was formally known as Pacific Echo from 1998 until July 2004. Today, the name has been restored back to Scharffenberger Cellars under the management of Maisons Marques & Domaines.
Scharffenberger Brut Excellence is made by the traditional méthode champenoise process – whereby the wines are individually bottle-fermented before being riddled and disgorged. The wine is approximately two-thirds Pinot Noir and one-third Chardonnay and undergoes 100% malolactic fermentation. Scharffenberger Brut is made from its own 120-acre vineyards in the Anderson Valley. In addition, Scharffenberger Cellars has long-term contracts with select vineyards in the greater Mendocino County. This type of vineyard selection allows us to choose from the best vineyards in the area which enables us to produce our trademark cuvée." - Winery Notes

Scharffenberger Brut N/V Reviews

"Beautifully balanced between maturity and freshness, this elegant bubbly combines appetizing cherry, almond and ginger flavors with a suave texture and long finish. It achieves a level of personality and sophistication beyond simple fruitiness. " - 91, Wine Enthusiast
"A delightfully racy sparkler, with tart apple and floral anise aromas leading to zesty lime and lemon flavors, presenting accents of cinnamon and spicy ginger." - 90, Wine Spectator

Scharffenberger Brut N/V Tasting Notes

The wine is two-thirds Pinot Noir which produces a red fruit (cherry and plum) forward nose combined with one-third Chardonnay which adds the tropical expression of litchi nut and mango. The 100% malolactic fermentation adds a vanilla cream character producing a round and full-bodied wine. After approximately two years on the yeast lees, there are notes of freshly baked bread and pastry that enhances the more fruit forward style of the wine. Finally, after several months on the cork the wine develops caramel and hazel complexors.

Product Description

"With another year in the record books, the 2014 vintage came in at the third-largest grape harvest ever, down eight percent from the previous year. A mild winter and spring with drought conditions persisting, bud break occurred early. From southern to northern California winemakers have stated that it was an even earlier harvest then years before, starting with sparkling grapes in July and ending mid-October for later ripening varieties. Despite the drought, California will produce another great vintage. Arid conditions have given the grapes a chance to struggle, which thins out the vines and allows the clusters to gain concentration of -avor, intensity and complexity." - Winery Notes

Big Smooth Old Vines Zinfandel 2014 Tasting Notes

"Our 2014 vintage is a dynamic blend that truly showcases what California Zinfandels are all about. Lively aromas of blackberry, purple basil, and cocoa draw you in as the fragrance of roasted almonds emerges. The oak aging is highlighted in this robust blend through hints of molasses, dried blueberry and raspberry. With the Merlot adding mid-palate structure and the Petite Sirah contributing to a well-rounded and velvety feel, this wine has not only a memorable start but an impressive finish as well." - Winery Notes

Product Description

"A tale of two vintages, the Willamette Valley saw near-perfect weather up until late September when the remnants of typhoon Pabuk from the Western Pacific slammed into the Pacific Northwest and forced a brief intermission from harvest activity. When the sun returned in the first week of October it brought about one of the warmest and driest Octobers on record. A classic Indian Summer.

An exceptionally dry, mild winter ushered in a growing season in the Willamette Valley that commenced with bud break in early April, roughly two weeks ahead of its typical schedule. Bloom occurred in mid-June under clear, blue skies leading to the commencement of harvest on September 13th - a full month earlier than 2011. The rain and cold arrived on September 27th and Laurent Montalieu decided to wait it out before picking the remaining 60% of our crop. This decision proved to be fortuitous as the warmth of October allowed for superb sugar levels in the berries coinciding with perfect physiological ripeness. Laurent described this as an incredible ending to a challenging harvest with the berries picked before the rain showing more delicacy and finesse, while the berries picked after the rain show deeper, darker, more complex fruit. In the end, the wines of 2013 will become another exceptional, and classically Oregon vintage." - Winery Notes

Hyland "Coury" Pinot Noir 2013 Reviews

"The old vines at the heart of this wine date back decades. Finely threaded herb and mineral highlights peek through a solid frame of berry and plum fruit. The barrel flavors, from 10 months in French oak, are balanced and persistent. Put this one away for drinking from 2020 to 2030." - 92, Wine Enthusiast

Product Description

"Michael and David Phillips represent the fifth generation of growers in Lodi, and things are changing. With 500 acres of premium wine grapes, there is plenty of room for experimentation and innovation.
The vineyards are irrigated by the Mokelumne River, which carries crystal-clear water from the Sierra Nevada Mountains, depositing minerals into the rich soils upon which the grapes thrive. Though not certified organic, Michael~David Winery strives to use all natural methods including integrated pest management, beneficial insects for pest control, trellising, leaf pulling and natural mined sulfur for mildew control. We are six generations of winegrowers specializing in hand-crafted Rhone varietals as well as Lodi's famous Old Vine Zinfandels." - Winery Notes

Earthquake Zinfandel 2013 Reviews

"Michael David Winery also scores impressively with their moderately priced Zinfandels. The 2013 Zinfandel Earthquake is 100% Zinfandel, a 30,000-case cuvée aged in American oak. It is no wimpy Zinfandel at 15.5% alcohol, but is full-bodied, offering briary, peppery, meaty and herbal black fruits and some red fruits. The wine is pure, deep, fleshy, and ideal for drinking over the next 3-4 years." - 91, Wine Advocate

Earthquake Zinfandel 2013 Tasting Notes

Peppery and spicy with plenty of berry fruit (cherries and raspberries) intertwinedwith dusty, loamy soil. Incense and a Provencial garrigue-like notejump from the glass of this impressive wine.

"B" Adventurous!
Line 39 WinesShopUncorked.com is pleased to offer another selection from our client favorite, B Cellars!  This Chardonnay from Dutton Ranch is perfect for even non-Chardonnay lovers.  And with the holidays just around the corner, this is a FANTASTIC hostess gift!

Product Description

"When B Cellars’ founder Jim Borsack first encountered his partner Duffy Keys at a Fourth of July barbecue in 2002, both executives were exploring new life paths in the wine business. Over a drop of the good stuff, of course, their journeys became intertwined when they discovered that they not only shared the same tastes in wine but were also on parallel missions to acquire vineyard property.
In the spring of 2003, they scrapped their solo endeavors, formed B Cellars, and got serious about structuring a first-rate wine company predicated upon two absolute principles: first, to produce exceptional artisan wines, season after season, by employing a multi-vineyard strategy, and second, to develop distinct flavors by blending wines from mutually complementary varietals.  Not long after they met the third key player, Kirk Venge named 'One of the Top 20 New Winemakers in the World' by Food & Wine Magazine (October 2005). Kirk brought with him a 37 year wine making legacy via his father, Nils, and a keen understanding of the Napa appellation. A bond was established almost immediately. “With Kirk’s passion for great wine, first-hand knowledge and commitment to excellence, it quickly became apparent that he was the ideal winemaker for B Cellars,” said Jim.  All team members were in concert with the idea of blending the finest red wines from the Napa Valley Appellation, and Kirk was given the mandate to create three proprietary blends of consummate quality from year to year.
The B Cellars name and logo stand for a commitment to seasonless excellence. The letter ‘b’ and the degree symbol º refer to BRIX, a wine term which defines the optimal sugar/alcohol content in grape juice that indicates the potential for greatness.  B Cellars is committed to the artisan approach, creating perfectly balanced and complex wines. We are confident you will enjoy them and be proud to share them with friends and family." - Winery Notes

B Cellars Dutton Ranch Chardonnay 2012 Tasting Notes

"Our Dutton Ranch Chardonnay hails from the Mill Station Vineyard in Green Valley within the Russian River Valley AVA. This cool climate Dijon clone bursts with notes of caramelized pineapple, mango, papaya, and robust barrel warmth. Opulent mouth-feel, impeccable balance, and a sensational finish define this single vineyard Chardonnay." - Winery Notes

The Cousins hand-craft over ten different wines and feature some of the best vineyards in California, including Maple Vineyards Zinfandel and Maple Vineyards Tina’s Block (perhaps California’s BEST Zinfandel vineyard), Durell Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, Parmelee-Hill Pinot and Zinfandel, Bacigalupi Pinot Noir, Castelli Knight Pinot Noir, and Dutton Chardonnay.  From the seven-acre estate vineyard, they produce Il Campo ("Field Blend"), a delicious combination of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah." - Winery Notes

Poizin Dry Creek Zinfandel 2014 Tasting Notes

"A lush, delicious and 'serious' wine but in a fun package! The nose is fruit driven with fresh plum, bing cherry, spicy peppercorn and zinberry. The mouthfeel is soft with a hint of milk chocolate, sweet oak, and a long vanilla finish. The deep color and firm structure are enhanced by the addition of the Petite Sirah and the firm tannins softened by moderate oak. "Tenuta Sassoregale is in the Tuscan Maremma. Located in the south of the region, the Maremma’s wild, untouched territory is Italy's new wine frontier.
The estate is located among gently sloping hills covered in the medley of vegetation that makes up Mediterranean scrubland. Broom, arbutus, bramble briars, juniper, myrtle and heather grow among cork-oaks, holm oaks, cypresses and pines. All can be found in this soothing, wild landscape between the sea and the high hills of Montalcino rising to the north-northeast.
High planting densities, cordon spurtrained vines, low environmental impact vineyard management and meticulous cellar operations are all instrumental in preserving a strong, distinctively territorial imprint on wines that are known for their balance power and elegance.'" - Winery Notes

"Singing" The Praises of Gruner Veltliner!
Line 39 WinesGrown most prevalently in Austria, the Gruner Veltliner is an under utilized wine, that is VERY food friendly!  Gruner Veltliner is actually believed to date back to Roman times.  So, while this may be a newer varietal to this continent, it has proven its staying power through the years.  This week's WOW is a shining example of a quality product and one in which illustrates a true representation of the fruit.

Product Description

"Laurenz V was created for white wine lovers everywhere. The winery focuses on a single wine variety--Grüner Veltliner--that has long been a  favorite in its native Austria, where it represents nearly a third of the country's wine grape production. Grüner Veltliner has been  quickly catching on in the rest of the world, too!
Laurenz V is made by the Lenz Moser family, and is the most recent offering in the family's five  generations of wine making experience. The wine comes from the Kamptal and Kremstal areas of lower Austria where the warmth  of the Danube Valley meets the cool air of the Waldviertel region. This combination develops fresh, fruity flavors in grapes  while maintaining excellent acidity. The winery makes two wines—Laurenz V. Charming Grüner Veltliner from Kamptal, and Laurenz  und Sophie Singing Grüner Veltliner, a wine inspired by Lenz' daughter Sophie, predominantly from Kremstal." - Winery Notes

Laurenz "Singing" Gruner Veltliner 2014 Tasting Notes

A very attractive fruit bouquet yields apple, peach and citrus aromas along with a typical Veltliner spiciness and a touch of white pepper. The soft and juicy palate is supported by fine acidity.

Made from 88% Syrah, 6% Grenache and the rest Mourvedre, aged mostly in French oak (which is a positive change from the American oak used for the 2013), with a small part in concrete, drink this pleasure-bent effort over the coming 4-5 years."  - 92, Wine Advocate

Line 39 Wines

ShopUncorked.com is CELEBRATING this week - just 6 days until Mother's Day and what better way than to celebrate with Deutz?!  And what better to do that with than with a bottle of Champagne?!  We are pleased to share that  ShopUncorked.com now has two offerings from the Deutz House.  Pop a cork and enjoy!

Product Description

"Since 1838, Champagne Deutz, one of the oldest members of the former and prestigious Association of Grandes Marques, has been making champagnes of a distinctive style characterised by a perfect harmony of finesse, elegant vinosity and complexity. Sourcing from more 245 hectares (approx. 600 acres) of vineyards, amongst the finest of Champagne’s crus, as well as a rigorous selection of the choice bunches, allow Deutz to use only top quality grapes. The wines are slowly and carefully aged in the cool hush of the 3 kilometres of the House cellars which have been carved in the chalky soil of the famous historic village of Aÿ. The “Deutz trio Prestige” comprises three prestige cuvées, each with its very distinct personality. Cuvée William Deutz is made from the best pinots and chardonnays; Cuvée Amour de Deutz is composed uniquely of the finest chardonnays; finally there is Cuvée William Deutz Rosé. In each of these styles, Maison Deutz shows the full extent of its know-how and its attachment to precise, finely tuned wines. Deutz champagnes are distributed all over the world in first class restaurants, fine food shops and specialized wine shops." - Winery Notes

Deutz Brut Rose N/V Tasting Notes

"This has a many-hued color with strong pink tinges and fine bubbles. The nose is fresh and direct, with aromas reminiscent of cherries, blackberries, pomegranates and red currants. On the palate, the wine shows a deliciously full body that follows on perfectly from the nose. Its flavors remind one of fresh strawberries and raspberries. The finish has a pleasantly acidulous character that adds to the impression of finesse given by this romantic and well-balanced wine." - Winery Notes

Deutz Brut Classic N/V Tasting Notes

"The most 'classical' of the Deutz cuvees is far from mundane. The three different champagne grapes are blended in equal and unchanging proportions, ensuring it shows perfect harmony. Its golden color scintillates in the glass, with a fine stream of bubbles rising gracefully to the surface. The first impressions on the nose are mellow and reminiscent of acacia flowers, confectionery, Reinette apples and brioche. The wine then gains in volume and its silky texture reveals a successful balance between the freshness of Chardonnay, t he fruitiness and structure of Pinot Noir and a touch of vinosity from the Pinot Meunier." - Winery Notes

May I Please Have a Sidebar? Line 39 Wines

The newest project from David Ramey is one of which to take note.  In partnership with his daughter, Claire, these wines are fresh, relevant and at reasonable price points.

Product Description

"Legendary winemaker David Ramey started his career in wine with little more than a degree in enology and a dream. After nearly two decades of creating benchmark wines for such California wineries as Matanzas Creek, Chalk Hill, Dominus and Rudd, David Ramey and his wife Carla founded Ramey Wine Cellars in 1996. David’s wines are made in an old-world style and are consistently rated among the best wines in California. Today, David and Carla very much still run a family business. As their children take on roles within the company, the Rameys wish to expand the family’s legacy to reflect the significance of its future generation of winemaking and consumers. Thus, Sidebar Cellars was founded, with daughter, Claire, at the helm. Sidebar currently offers Kerner from Lodi’s Mokelumne River area, Lake County Sauvignon Blanc and Rosé made from Russian River Valley old-vine Syrah." - Winery Notes

Musical (Wine) Interlude
Line 39 Wines

Our two favorite worlds FINALLY meet on ShopUncorked.com: Music and Wine!  We are pleased to start carrying Zac Brown's wine project and highlighting the quality products originating from the North Coast.  Getting close to these wines is FAR less costly ($13.98 per bottle) than a concert ticket - ENJOY!

Product Description

"Zac Brown has always been a man on a journey. Most know him for his music, yet his artistry and creative spirit are without boundaries. No matter where the adventure takes him, Zac has always remained downhome and truthful to his roots. His lifelong connection to the land and passion for bringing music, food, and people together was a natural path to wine.
John Killebrew, who grew up in California, developed a love for nature, gardening, cooking, and music at an early age. Though he and Zac grew up on opposite ends of the country, distance did not stop them from sharing a common passion and respect for the land.
As a winemaker, John is able to tap into his desire to make things with his own hands, stay immersed in nature, and find each season’s expression through the vines. Z. Alexander Brown is the reward of this relentless commitment and partnership with Zac to create bold "uncaged" wines rooted in the heart of California wine country." - Winery Notes

Longing for 2011?
Line 39 Wines

Although many wineries struggled with the late and wet spring and cooler summer temperatures of the 2011 growing season - a good handful of wineries and winemakers persevered.  Taste all of the goodness 2011 had to offer in this bottle and stock up!  This wine's price has been slashed in HALF to make way for new vintages.

Product Description

In the autumn of 1989, Jess Jackson acquired the Zellerbach winery and renamed it in honor of his late father, Jess Stonestreet Jackson. Stonestreet quickly garnered international acclaim for their powerful reds and luscious whites.
Today, Stonestreet wines are undergoing a transformation, using fruit from Alexander Mountain Estate and new winemaking techniques. Alexander Mountain Estate, with lean, well-draining soils and cooler temperature, produces fruit with smaller berries and more intense color and flavor. Stonestreet is dedicated to fulfilling the promise of Alexander Valley's exceptional and distinctive vineyards. Traditional, Old World methods of hand harvesting, small barrel lot production, native yeast fermentation and bottling each wine unfiltered brings out the best in specific grape varieties and provides the quality framework for each Stonestreet wine.

The Ventana Vineyard was planted in 1974.  The vineyard was named "Ventana," Spanish for "window," because the vineyard lies up against the Ventana Wilderness in Monterey County, but also because it symbolized a "window to the future" in California viticulture.  At the time, there were very few vineyards in the area, but today, Monterey has taken its rightful place beside Napa and Sonoma as one of the great wine regions of California." - Winery Notes

Looking for a hidden gem - look NO further!  Introducing Scherrer Pinot Noir.  Only 680 cases of this Russian River Pinot Noir were produced and it is priced at just $35.10 and comes along a 92 point rating as a free-gift-with-purchase!

Product Description

"There seems to be a kernel to this wine that is reminiscent of how flavors come out of a lemon drop candy. It’s like you feel the hard candy in the center of your mouth, but the location where the flavors show themselves are in the dissolved, non-solid part like a halo.  It’s that kernel that replenishes the flavor pool.  This wine seems kind of like that (however with different flavors than a lemon-drop).  I’m excited about this wine in that it has the potential to make friends early on as well as to develop into something more interesting and complex in a graceful fashion for years to come.  Its message should echo for many years and as it does, it should change from the crystal-clarity of the initial message, gaining interest as it diffuses and resonates over time realizing a kind of self-harmony." - Winery Notes

Scherrer Pinot Noir 2010 Reviews

"Bright ruby-red. Smoky cherry and red berry aromas, with hints of licorice and spicecake in the background. Spicy and focused on entry, then deeper n the mid-palate, offering potent raspberry and bitter cherry flavors and a hint of succulent herbs. The smoky note comes back on the finish, which is taut, brisk and very persistent." - 92, International Wine Cellar

Scherrer Pinot Noir 2010 Tasting Notes

"While grown primarily in the sandy Goldridge soil, which tends to produce Pinot Noir with flavors of red fruits and orange peel, this wine also illustrates some of the deep, brooding black cherry character generally found in the region’s clay soils. It was bottled without fining or filtration, and should age gracefully for a handful of years. 680 cases produced." - Winery Notes

Product Description

"Château Blaignan is a fine estate of 97 hectares (240 acres) in the northern part of the Médoc. It has been planted with vine since the 14th century. There is nothing left today of the ancient fortress (seat of the Lords of Blaignan in the Middle-Ages, which gave its name both to the land and to the noble family who owned the manor), except for a few ruins next to the church in the old village of Blaignan. Pierre Merman, a protestant from a Dutch family that settled in Bordeaux in the 17th century, acquired the estate just after the French Revolution. His family and, especially, his daughter, Jeanne Marie Reine Peychaud, assisted by her husband Charles, turned "Taffard-Blaignan" into a model estate. They extended the property considerably, repaired the buildings and built a country mansion of the type known locally as a 'chartreuse.'The wine reached the envied rank of Cru Bourgeois in 1932, under the name 'Château Taffard de Blaignan.' In 2004, CA Grands Crus, a subsidiary of Groupe Crédit Agricole, acquired Château Blaignan. An improvement plan was put together for the entire estate." - Winery Notes

Chateau Blaignan Cru Bourgeois 2012 Tasting Notes

"The wine is of an intense colour. The nose is fruity with pronounced notes of blackcurrant, black cherries and a hint of spice. Full bodied, Château Blaignan shows structure and velvet tannins on the palate, that make it a wine to drink young or to keep a few years in cellar (to be kept between 3 to 12 years)." - Winery Notes
